WMB Sponsorship Deal with Sidecar Racer Wayne Lockey

Following on from our recent LRT Sponsorship deal, we are always looking to find ways to support our local talent and have some exciting news for you sidecar racer fans…

We are happy to announce that we have maintained our sponsorship with Wayne Lockey, as we enter our 11th year as one of his major sponsors. Wayne is a top sidecar racer that has a proven track record with a long list of accolades to his name. Sidecar racers take on the challenge of a three-wheeled motorcycle to tackle the tracks. The third wheel is not directly aligned with the rear wheel, creating an unusual and challenging riding experience. Hats off, Wayne!

Who is Wayne Lockey?

Wayne Lockey started racing sidecars in 2000, after going to watch the Isle Of Man TT in 1996. Sidecar racing has an incredible amount of hype surrounding its events and it was the combination of the unique vehicles and the exciting events that caught his attention. His three wheeled motor obsession then took a hold of him and he began to prepare himself into becoming an official sidecar racer. In the midst of his preparation, Wayne and some of his close friends decided to create a team name called Real Racing. The name came from the team ethos surrounding their no nonsense approach – no stars, no glamour just pure passion for racing that is 100% real. After entering club meets and learning the hard way a few times, Wayne gained his national license in 2005 and became a successful club contestant.

What are Wayne’s career highlights so far?

Real Racing became a major force in the sidecar industry, competing in many events across the nation. The year 2006 saw the team enter the Isle Of Man TT for the first time. This event is one of the UK’s biggest in moto sports, with some of the best talent on show. This was a great opportunity for Wayne and his team to really create a real name for themselves nationally, and that is exactly what they did, coming home with the Best Newcomer Award from such a prestigious event.

And the awards didn’t stop there! Over the past seven years, Wayne and his team have won more than three events and placed for 11 races. Now that’s living life in the fast lane!

Wayne in action reminds us why we do what we do. If you haven’t experienced this yet, check out one of his latest races…

What are some of the most memorable moments from his career?

Wayne teamed up with passenger Mark Sayers from Leeds in 2013. They were contesting for the BEMSEE Championship and had travelled to Brandshatch for the finale, they needed two points to win the event going into the last race. Having fuelled up ready for practice, they soon realised that the fuel in the bike wasn’t quite right. After a quick inspection of the vehicle they realised that someone had put in diesel instead of petrol. After refuelling with petrol, they prepared for the meeting and went out for the race.

The race began well with Real Racing in the lead and heading for victory, with the finish line in sight, the bike suddenly spluttered and came to a halt. They had ran out of fuel! With their heads in their hands as they watched a few of the racers go by. They thought that they had lost the championship due to simply not having enough fuel in their tank. However, fortunately it wasn’t all doom and gloom as they witnessed 2nd place break down which meant the points we theirs. The championship was now back in the bag for Real Racing.

Why did Wayne choose to partner with WMB?

Wayne always had the talent, but found he lacked funding to take him to the next level of pursuing championships. With the help from WMB, Wayne began to fulfill his ambitions.

Wayne met Paul Lusty, WMB owner/director many years ago. They very quickly realised they had a lot of common interests including the motorcycle industry.

Wayne had this to say about WMB’s involvement:

“WMB is an outstanding company with a first class work ethic, exceptional customer service and an eager eye in Paul and Tony for spotting top talent. They are a genuine and caring company that are passionate about the motorcycle industry and all aspects of engaging a satisfied customer base with positive results.”
